Have you noticed that when you are typing on your laptop, the cursor jumps to another line?  That happens to a lot of people.  It is a problem with most laptop trackpads.  They are too sensitive and the vibration of typing causes the cursor to jump.  The only way to stop this is to disable the trackpad and use an external mouse.  Please let me know if you need help with this.

There are several options available to you to find an email in Outlook.  One is to sort your Inbox by Date, Subject, Sender or Subject.

To do this – just click on the column heading (example – click on the heading Sender).

Another way is to use the Advanced Find feature.

Outlook 2010:  Click your mouse on the Search box at the top of the screen.  The Ribbon changes with different selections.  Click the down arrow next to Search Tools and choose Advanced Find.

Also, type them into a document on your PC.  It is a good idea to have them in two places.

(Yes, I know, it is work.  Think about how much work it’ll be to find all those email addresses again……you’ll thank me later)

Find all the software for your PC and put it in a box or ziploc bag.  There are times when it is needed and if you can’t find it, you’ll need to purchase it again.

There are advantages and disadvantages of getting your mail online (AOL, Hotmail, MSN, Gmail, Yahoo) etc. The advantage is, it is online and wherever you get online you have your mail. The disadvantage is – it isn’t being backed up.

MSN, Hotmail etc. are NOT backing up your mail or your contacts. If someone hacks your account (which happens more and more frequently), they can change your password, delete your mail, email your contacts, and even delete your contacts.

It is a mess when that happens.

What you can do to mitigate this happening:

1. Configure a local email client. What is a local email client? Outlook, Windows Live mail, Thunderbird. If the local client is configured to bring down your mail, then it is saved on your hard drive. Yes, your hard drive can have issues as well. That is why you do a backup.

2. If you do get hacked, at least you will have your current mail and contacts. If the only place you have this info is online, you will lose it if you get hacked and your provider (AOL, Gmail etc.) are not backing it up for you.

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR GMAIL, AOL, MSN, HOTMAIL ACCOUNT HAS BEEN HACKED

First what NOT to do:

Don’t call Comcast

Don’t call Verizon

Don’t call Microsoft

Don’t call your computer manufacturer (Dell, HP, Sony, Lenovo)

They can’t help and it isn’t their issue.

If your Verizon or Comcast account mail has been hacked, then yes, they are the ones to call. If it is Gmail, Yahoo etc. – it isn’t your ISP’s nor Dell, nor HP issue nor can they help.

If you are using a free account (Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail, MSN) – then you will need to pay them to talk to you. Support is not free for free email accounts.

It is next to impossible to get any of them on the phone as they all support via the net.

You can try to reset the password online but you will HAVE to remember the security questions you had setup when you created the account.

FACEBOOK, LINKEDIN, TWITTER BEEN HACKED?

Social networks (Facebook etc.) are VERY insecure and are hacked all the time. You should use a DIFFERENT password on social networks (LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter) than you use anywhere else.

If your account gets hacked, first run your spyware and virus cleaners on your local PC to make sure you are clean.

Once you know your PC isn’t compromised, change your social networking passwords and notify everyone not to click on links. One of the easiest ways to get infected is to be tricked into clicking on links on these sites.

Calling your computer manufacturer when stuff happens is only going to frustrate you. Recently, a client called Dell and they billed her $250 to support and they didn’t fix the issue (because it wasn’t their issue).

This can happen to you.  To safeguard yourself:

1.  ALWAYS write down the security questions and their answers to all your accounts.  You think you are going to remember the answers, but you may not.

2.  Configure a local mail client (Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Live Mail, Thunderbird) to download your online mail.  If you need help configuring this, let me know.  The reason to do this is so the client will download your mail and your contacts.  By doing this, you will have a copy of your mail saved to your hard drive.  If you only have this online, and you get hacked, you are SOL.  I’ve seen it happen that the hacker will delete your mail and contacts.

3.  I know you have a gazillion passwords, however, use a DIFFERENT one for Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter than you do for your email.  Your passwords should be at least 7 characters, include a capital letter and a number.  WRITE your passwords down!   If you do online banking – make it a completely different password for all the others.

4.  Make sure to UPDATE and then run your spyware cleaner at least once a month.  

If you are hacked, please contact me as I might be able to help.  Don’t call Verizon, AOL, Microsoft etc.  They can’t help you, nor is it their issue.  Your email provider (Gmail, Hotmail, MSN) etc.  are only going to help if you remember your security questions.   Some of them won’t even talk to you unless you pay them as you have a free account and support is not free.

Personally, I’d advise you not rely on online mail without configuring your local client so you can have a backup.  Hacking has become very common and it is a nightmare to unravel.
